I was born in Dalton-in-Furness, a Cumbrian town then in North Lancashire, in November, 1945 and have a sister. My parents were both born in Furness but my great grandparents came from Redruth, Lanner and St. Day, so from a small child learnt about Cornish pride. Those ancestors had moved up to Furness for the iron ore mining in the mid 19th. century as the tin mines were closing down in Cornwall.
At 21 I left home to 'seek my fortune' (and I'm still seeking it - please help!) in Leicester. I eventually ended up in Burton-upon-Trent, the Beer Capital of Britain, and inevitably worked for a brewery, the well known Marston's. After a while I was made redundant and wondered what I could do. I had done some announcing at concerts by a local Community wind band (see the 'Testimonials' page) and after some good feedback from different people thought, "I could do that for a living and I could be a toastmaster!". My late mother had been a public speaker and taught me all she knew about speaking in public, so why not use what some people would call a 'talent'? After a while I decided I would semi-retire in my beloved Cornwall and bring my 'talent' with me. So here I am. I moved here in March 2007 and feel I have 'come home'.
